Wild Horse and Burro Territories in NM[by Patience O'Dowd of WHOA] On April 8, 2003 the USDA Forest Service provided WHOA with a list of all Wild Horse and Burro Territories in New Mexico (this list was later found to be incomplete, see FSM 2200 - Range Management document). As part of this data they also listed the number of desired wild horses/burros in each territory, as well as the number of cattle grazing allotments. The total desired for the horses in our National Forests in New Mexico is 148. We have another 70 on BLM land in Soccorro I believe which are also recognized under the 1971 Act. I think that's ALL for the entire state that are recognized. We have others that are wild but they are not recognized as wild and therefore when captured are considered Livestock and most often go for slaughter as "estray" under the NM Livestock Code mis-interpretation. This is what happened to many of the wild horses in Placitas NM where I live. For actual data from the USDA Forest Service see below.... Hello Patience . . .
