Senator Pete Domenici Dear Senator Domenici: I am writing to entreat your support of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR 857). This legislation will ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international transport of live AMERICAN horses or their meat products for human consumption. The history of our great Nation is written on the backs of these noble animals. They have carried our troops into battle, served us proudly in the entertainment industry and sports venues, and continue to be treasured friends and companions to millions in the United States. They deserve better than struggling in fear and agony in foreign-owned slaughterhouses. Why, the trip from the backyard, farm or ranch through the auction process is in itself barbaric and should not be tolerated by a nation built on religious and moral standards. I personally have sat in a NM auction house and seen the cruel treatment these animals receive. I have also watched friends of mine intervene on behalf of the mistreated animals; one time stopping the use of electric cattle prods on the faces of hysterical equines by the chute operators. The auction house experience is followed by long hauls in overcrowded trucks without food or water. Figures range from 42,000 to 65,000 horses a year going for slaughter. We must stop this tragedy. It is my understanding that a companion Bill will soon be introduced into the U.S. Senate. I beg you, Sir, to do all within your power to stop the mass slaughter of our equine friends. Thank you,
